Burrowes Post 48, American Legion, Department of Nebraska, was founded September 20th, 1919 by Ronald F. Rowe and thirteen other signatories. It was named after John Burrowes, a Loup City native, who passed away in LaTreport France on 17 October, 1918. John's remains were repatriated to Loup City in July 1921. From that beginning, Post 48 has grown to a current total of 154 members.
Post 48 continues to emphasize community. The four pillars of the American Legion are National Security/Foreign Defense, Children and Youth, Americanism, and Veterans Affairs. Translated locally, Post 48 continues to support the pillars as follows.
Our post combines with others in the State and National Organization to provide a realistic viewpoint of National Security by those who have implemented it.
The Burrowes Post is active in the community of youth by supporting either the VFW Voice of America program or the Legion Oratorical Program. Both allow students from Loup City High School to compete by presenting speeches pertaining to different aspects of our country and its institutions. We also fund four different scholarships for High School Seniors going on to further their educations.
Some of the pillars such as Americanism cross over several categories. Post 48 supports Legion Baseball in the summer, and also youth Boxing beginning in the fall. Both programs are provide our local youth with constructive activities, as well as lessons in sports competition which translate so well into life. The Post also provides expertise to the community in things like flag protocol and retirement.
Finally, as an organization made up of Veterans, we are closely attuned to Veterans affairs. Within the Post there is considerable expertise in how to obtain benefits for ex-servicemembers. And last of all, we willingly accept the responsibility to send off those of us who pass, with appropriate honors.
Links on this web page provide access for all of our different programs, or contact numbers/emails for our Officers. You can also download our annual newsletter to have a schedule of events. We are also including links to the national and state headquarters of the American Legion.
We will put photographs on our page of the events we conduct in the community. Even if you can't make it, at least you will be able to see who is there. Instructions for uploading pictures will be included on the page. Or you can give them to any of the Post Officers; we will see to it that they get loaded in.
The webpage will be a first for our post, so if you have any recommendations, please send them in!!! As in most internet first-starts, there are bound to be some issues. If, for instance, one of the links doesn't work, we depend on you to let us know!
